Situated on the outskirts of Kathu in the Northern Cape Province, Sishen Golf Club winds through a 500-hectare Camelthorn forest on the edge of the Kalahari Desert. Built and maintained by Sishen Iron Ore mine and officially opened in 1979, it was the last course designed by Robert (Bob) Grimsdell. The par 72, 18-hole course is approximately 6450 meters long and features lush green fairways and greens that have surprised many visitors to this arid region. The course is the annual host to the Kalahari Classic, which forms part of the Vodacom SA Tour and other prestigious amateur events.
The course is well bunkered and absolutely laden with stunning Camel Thorn trees, and brings water into play on three holes. Notable holes include the risk-reward par-5 sixth with a thorn tree in the center of the fairway and the driveable dog-leg 14th with a green shielded by mounds and deep bunkers. Since its inception, Sishen has consistently ranked within the top 30 golf courses in South Africa. Being situated off the beaten track, the course is blissfully un-congested and visitors are always assured of getting a game here.
