Rudding Park Golf Course

North Yorkshire

Rudding Park Golf Course is situated within a 300-acre estate at Follifoot on the southern outskirts of Harrogate in North Yorkshire, attached to a Grade I listed Regency country house dating to 1805. The estate's parkland was originally landscaped by the celebrated 18th-century designer Humphrey Repton, and the golf course was designed by Martin Hawtree — an architect whose firm has been associated with more than 800 courses worldwide, including work at Royal Birkdale and the Old Course at St Andrews — opening in 1995. The course plays to a par of 72 over 6,883 yards and is routed in a traditional out-and-back fashion, with the front nine leading away from the clubhouse and the back nine returning. Greens and tees are built to USGA specification. The layout makes extensive use of the estate's mature woodland and natural features, with water hazards coming into play on several holes. The most distinctive section of the course centres on the twelfth, thirteenth, and fourteenth holes, which run through a corridor of mature woodland in a sequence the club draws comparison to Augusta National's Amen Corner. Rhododendrons line the fairways and a stream intersects two of the three holes. The par-3 fourteenth, named Rhododendron Glade, is the course's signature hole at 163 yards, playing uphill into the prevailing wind with three bunkers protecting the front of the green and a further hidden bunker to the right. The par-4 thirteenth is regarded as one of the tighter and more demanding holes on the card. Complementing the main course is the six-hole Repton Short Course, designed also by Martin Hawtree and opened in 2008 at a cost of around £750,000. Built to USGA specification throughout, it features par-3 holes including a replica of the island-green seventeenth at TPC Sawgrass in Florida, playing the same yardage of 137 yards. Rudding Park served as a venue for the PGA Super 60s tournament between 1998 and 2005, with some gaps, and the facility also includes an 18-bay floodlit driving range and Golf Academy.
