Kiawah Island Golf Resort - The Ocean Course

SC

The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort is an 18-hole, par-72 championship course designed by Pete and Alice Dye. Located on the eastern end of Kiawah Island, it features the most seaside holes in the Northern Hemisphere, with ten holes directly hugging the Atlantic Ocean and eight running parallel to them. The course's distinctive characteristic is its extreme exposure to wind. With no prevailing winds, Dye essentially designed two courses in one-one for easterly and one for westerly conditions. Players can experience up to an 8-club difference on holes depending on wind direction and strength, making it one of the world's most wind-affected courses outside the UK and Ireland. Alice Dye's suggestion to raise the entire course above the dunes, rather than building behind them, provides unobstructed ocean views from every hole but significantly increases difficulty by exposing play to the Atlantic's unpredictable breezes. The course is ranked #4 among U.S. public courses and 25th among Golf Digest's 100 Greatest U.S. Golf Courses. The layout combines strategic risk-reward holes with demanding approach shots and challenging greens positioned within natural dune formations and sand ridges, creating a formidable test of golf skill.

The front nine totals 36 par with 3,484 yards from the back tees, while the back nine also plays to 36 par and 3,429 yards. The course is known for its demanding nature, with several long par-5s serving as signature holes. The 1st hole is a 577-yard downhill par-5 that serves as the opening hole, featuring a narrow fairway and a green protected by bunkers on both sides. The 7th hole, a 511-yard par-5, features a distinctive three-tiered green and rewards aggressive play for those who can reach in two. The 10th hole stretches to 592 yards, while the 16th is another 577-yard par-5 that requires a carry over a valley on the approach shot, making it one of the most challenging holes on the course. Kibi Country Club has hosted numerous significant amateur and professional tournaments since its opening. Notable events include the Okayama Open Golf Championship, which the club has hosted multiple times (in 1985, 2010, 2018, and 2023), the Kansai Professional Golf Championship in 1986, the Chugoku Inter Club Golf Competition, the All Japan Club Champions Amateur, the National Prefectural Amateur Championship, and the Chugoku Amateur Golf Championship. Kibogaoka Country Club is a 18-hole, par 72 course located in Tochigi Prefecture, specifically in the town of Motegi in Haga District. The layout is divided into an out course and an in course, each presenting distinct strategic challenges. The out course is characterized by undulating fairways and greens that demand precise putting, while the in course features a more orthodox design that requires significant driving distance to navigate effectively. The course total yardage varies by tee, ranging from 3,257 yards for the regular men’s tees to 3,605 yards on the championship set, with a par of 36 for each nine. A notable feature of the out course is the third hole, a par 3 where a large bunker known as the "Milky Way Bunker" sits in front of the green, resembling a river. The fourth hole offers a view of Mount Haga, locally referred to as "Haga Fuji," from the tee box. The course design incorporates significant elevation changes, with several holes playing downhill from the tee. The greens are generally two-tiered, adding complexity to the approach shots and putting sequences. The in course is defined by its length and the requirement for accurate shot-making. The twelfth hole, a par 5, stretches over 600 yards from the championship tees and features a narrow fairway that penalizes inaccurate drives. The fifteenth hole, another par 5, is noted for its scenic autumn foliage visible from the tee. Strategic hazards include bunkers and out-of-bounds areas, particularly on the second and seventh holes, where the landing zones are restricted. The facility includes extensive practice areas, such as a large putting green, an approach green, and an iron practice range located alongside the out course. The club has recently expanded and newly installed ladies' tees on specific holes, including the fourth, fifth, tenth, and seventeenth, to allow for different strategic challenges.
