Wrangaton Golf Course ☆ Follow

The origins of the course at Wrangaton Golf Club can be traced back to the club's formation in 1895. The modern day layout extends to around 180 acres on the edge of Dartmoor, consisting of common land, parkland, woodland and pasture. The course plays to a par of 70 with an overall length of 6,065 yards (36 out then 34 in), with only two par fives on the scorecard, at the 8th and 11th holes.

The longer front nine holes are shaped by the moorland landscape and the back nine holes contrast this with tree-lined parkland fairways. Until 1991 it was a nine-hole course but the acquisition of an additional 130 acres of open moorland, plus later purchases of 50 acres of adjacent farmland and woodland, the original nine holes became the front nine, with the back nine created in the parkland setting of the new area. Highlights include the only par three on the outward half at the 164 yard 4th; the tough par four 15th (rated stroke index 1); and the left doglegging par four closing hole.

Originally known as South Devon Golf Club, Wrangaton adopted its new name in 1922. The land for the course was donated to the club by Elizabeth Carew, who inherited the property from her father, Sir Walter Palk. The Wrangaton Golf Club closed permanently in 2023.
