Real Club Valderrama is located in Sotogrande, near San Roque in Andalucía, southern Spain. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and opened in 1974, it is one of Europe's most challenging championship courses. The 18-hole layout plays under 7,000 yards but demands precision, with small, quick greens featuring subtle breaks and guarded by deep bunkers. Signature holes include the par-5 4th "La Cascada" with its dramatic waterfall and water hazard, and the formidable par-5 17th "Los Gabilones," considered one of the world's toughest holes due to its length and water hazard.

Set through a cork oak forest, the course is defined by tight, tree-lined fairways with doglegs and firm fairway conditions. The immaculate maintenance standard is renowned, with precise agronomic standards reflected in perfectly manicured greens. Valderrama hosted the 1997 Ryder Cup (the first held outside the US and UK), the Volvo Masters from 1988-2008, and multiple professional tournaments. The course is intentionally penal—designed for championship play with the philosophy of "hard par, easy bogey." Its tight layout makes it grueling for amateur golfers, though playable when approached strategically.
