The Gauntlet Golf Club opened in 1995 as a par 72, 6,900-yard, P.B. Dye championship layout featuring lush zoysia fairways and smooth bentgrass greens set around the lake of Curtis Memorial Park in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The course is semi-public and features the area's largest grass practice facility.
The course begins with a tough front nine that has several sharp doglegs over water and tall grasses, with a slew of blind shots. The back nine is gentler with less water and is more open and forgiving, though the large, multi-tiered greens can be tricky. The Gauntlet awards precision, where most holes are target-oriented, narrow and tree-lined. The fourth hole is the signature hole, requiring a tee shot to carry a marsh to a narrow landing area on this par 5, with a triple-tiered green faced by the lake to the left and bunkers to the right.
When it first opened in 1995, Golf Digest recognized it as one of the top ten new courses to play in the U.S. The course has also been recognized in Washington Golf Monthly's "100 Best Courses to Play in the Mid-Atlantic".
