The Evans at Canal Shores is a not-for-profit, 9-hole golf course located in Evanston and Wilmette, Illinois, along the North Shore branch of the Chicago River. Originally opened in 1919 as Canal Shores, it was designed by renowned golf course architect Tom Bendelow. The 3,600-yard, par-60 layout offers moderate challenge with undeniable charm. The course uniquely winds through urban and suburban neighborhoods, featuring a 100-year-old oak forest, views of the Bahá'í House of Worship, and passes alongside Chicago's transit infrastructure including the "L" and Metra train tracks with several road crossings.
A comprehensive renovation began in 2022 under architect Todd Quitno to modernize the urban course. The redesigned facility now serves as a beacon for youth golf development and caddie training through partnerships with First Tee – Greater Chicago and the Western Golf Association/Evans Scholars Foundation. The renamed course honors Chick Evans, an amateur golf legend and founder of the Evans Scholars Foundation, which has awarded full scholarships to over 13,000 caddies since 1930. Located less than a mile from the original Evans Scholarship House established at Northwestern University in 1940, the course remains committed to providing affordable, accessible golf.
