Sunnehanna Country Club

Course Information Unclaimed

Sunnehanna Country Club was designed by A.W. Tillinghast in the early 1920s and opened in 1923. The course comprises 6,880 yards at par 74. Located on a beautiful property east of Pittsburgh with gentle rise and fall and elevated views of the surrounding Allegheny Mountains, the course meanders 360 degrees around the clubhouse. The greens are small in size and well bunkered, requiring accurate iron play, with fairway bunkers generally on one side of the fairway in typical Tillinghast fashion.

The 6th hole is the #1 handicap hole, a dogleg right measuring 435 yards with an uphill tee shot that plays into the prevailing wind and has been designated by the USGA Golf Journal as one of America's great holes. The 8th hole features a distinctive gully. The course underwent bunker renovations and tree removal in the early 2000s under Ron Forse, with more recent work by Bruce Hepner including bunker rebuilding, tee reconstruction, and fairway adjustments.

The club is home to the Sunnehanna Amateur, one of the top events since the 1950s that has attracted young players like Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods. The Sunnehanna Amateur began in 1954 and was the first 72-hole stroke play competition sponsored by a country club for amateurs in the USA, with winners including Ben Crenshaw, Jay Sigel, John Cook and Scott Verplank.
