South Downs Country Club was laid out by Captain Lumsden, a Scottish international, and opened in 1937 as an 11-hole course; seven additional holes were completed two years later. Originally known as Virginia Park Golf Club, the course adopted its current name in the 1950s. The par-72 course features 18 bent-grass greens and spans 6,239 meters from the club tees. The Parklands-style layout winds around the tranquil Bloubos Spruit, offering a design that is both challenging for experienced golfers and welcoming for beginners. The signature hole is a short but challenging par three with a small green guarded by water running along the right and front edges, while thick rough awaits any miss to the left. The course has notable historical significance, as Gary Player played his first round of golf here in 1949, and other professional golfers including Bobby Verwey, Tienie Britz, Bobby Lincoln, and Andre Cruse have also played out of South Downs Country Club.
