Royster Memorial Golf Course was established in 1948 when Dr. and Mrs. S.S. Royster donated approximately 50 acres of land to the City of Shelby for a Municipal Park, with a nine-hole course dedicated as part of the Shelby Parks and Recreation Department. The 9-hole course features 2,911 yards from the longest tees with a par of 35 and a course rating of 40.0 with a slope rating of 90.

The course is distinctive because while Shelby is located in the piedmont flatlands area, the course is filled with mountainous holes. The nine-hole course was carved out of a heavily wooded area with narrow, tree-lined fairways and medium-sized, very undulating greens. The course has been named in the top 25 public courses in the Charlotte area by Business Journal. As a municipal facility, it remains open to the public year-round and serves as an accessible option for golfers of various skill levels.
