The Jack Nicklaus-designed Great Waters Course opened at Reynolds Lake Oconee in 1992 as a 7,073-yard, par-72 layout offering some of the most dramatic golf scenery in the Southeast, with nine holes coming into play along the shores of Lake Oconee. The first eight holes begin with a parkland-style layout through rolling hills and thick forests, with the ninth hole introducing the golfer's first glimpse of the lake before the final eight holes feature panoramic views and challenging shots along Lake Oconee. The routing features 10 holes on Lake Oconee with varied water encounters, from carries off tees to water beside greens to coves in front of greens, with every encounter featuring generous bailout options and big but simple greens with few complex contours.
The course opened in 1992 and underwent a restoration in 2019, completely rebuilt and reconditioned to look almost exactly as Jack Nicklaus first designed it. Great Waters has played host to prestigious events including the Anderson Consulting World Championship of Golf from 1995 to 1997, the 41st PGA Professional National Championship in 2008, Golf Channel's Big Break Invitational in 2014, and the American Junior Golf Association's Rolex Tournament of Champions in 2016. The course has consistently ranked among the top 100 courses in the U.S. since it opened and was named one of the 10 most significant and influential courses of the past two decades by Links Magazine.
