Piping Rock Club

Course Information Unclaimed

Piping Rock Club is a country club in Matinecock, New York, within the ZIP Code boundaries of Locust Valley in Nassau County on Long Island. The club features an 18-hole links-style golf course designed by Charles B. Macdonald. The course measures 6,723 yards from the longest tees with a par of 71, a course rating of 73.0, and a slope rating of 134. The course opened in 1912.

Macdonald incorporated several of his signature design concepts at Piping Rock, including a canted Redan green and a Road Hole based on St. Andrews' 17th hole. Most notably, Piping Rock was where Macdonald first introduced the Biarritz hole design, which appears as the eighth hole with a 60-yard-deep green bisected by a 6-foot-deep trench. The terrain features a gentle, steady slope on the front nine and more dramatic elevation changes on the back nine. Designer Bruce Hepner recently enhanced the course by removing trees, reinstating old cross-bunkers, recapturing green sizes and adding tightly mown areas to green surrounds.

Historically, the club attracted prominent members including J. P. Morgan Jr., Benjamin Strong Jr. (first president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York), and prominent figures in publishing, insurance, and industry. The course has been ranked in Golf Digest's 100 Greatest Courses, reaching a high of 97th in 2023-'24 and holding the 98th ranking in 2025-'26.
