Mill River Country Club is a private 18-hole golf course located in Stratford, Connecticut, situated along the banks of the Housatonic River with views toward Long Island Sound. The course was originally established as a nine-hole layout in 1923 on former farmland and was expanded to its current 18-hole configuration in 1925 under the design of architect Thomas Winton. The property retains its historic character while offering modern amenities, including a clubhouse that overlooks the fairways and a driving range that underwent renovations in 2005. The course has a significant tournament history, having hosted the Shoreline Open Championship, a PGA Tour event, from 1937 to 1953. Notable golfers such as Gene Sarazen, Julius Boros, and Tommy Armour competed in the event during its 17-year run at the club. Mill River has also hosted the U.S. Ladies Amateur Championship and two Connecticut State Opens. Since 2002, the course has served as the annual host for the Players Ability Test for the Connecticut Section of the PGA. Golf operations at the club emphasize a social and inclusive atmosphere. Men’s golf features a "no tee time" policy on the first tee, allowing players to form groups of three, four, or five to ensure everyone can play together. The club offers structured programs for both men and women, including an 18-hole league for women that requires a USGA handicap index and a 9-hole program designed for skill development and casual play. The course accommodates various handicap levels, with a maximum handicap of 36 used for league play.
