Northeast Harbor Golf Club is an 18-hole course located on Mount Desert Island, Maine, founded in 1895 with its origins traced to amateur golfer J.G. Thorp's initial layout through pastureland. The club was formally incorporated in 1916 by 49 shareholders. The inner nine holes were designed by British amateur Arthur Lockwood and opened in 1919, while Herbert Strong added nine holes in 1925 to complete the full 18-hole layout. The course features forest and field terrain beneath towering pines with scenic views of the Maine coast. The outer nine holes were closed in 1939 during economic hardship but were gradually restored over subsequent decades, with the course fully restored to its original 18 holes by the 2000s. The club's design reflects traditional Scottish golf principles and offers a challenging layout through natural terrain. The course is characterized by its historical significance, natural setting, and the community dedication that preserved this longtime sporting venue. The club's motto, "Far and Sure," reflects its enduring commitment to the game.
