Lions Municipal Golf Course is an 18-hole public facility located at 2901 Enfield Rd in Austin, Texas. The course is situated on the former Brackenridge Tract, a site originally leased from the University of Texas. It operates as a municipal course managed by the city, featuring a driving range restricted to irons and putting greens for practice. The course was established in 1924 by the Lions Club as Austin's first public golf facility, initially constructed as a nine-hole layout before being expanded to 18 holes. Following the transfer of the lease to the city in 1936, the facility retained the name "Lions Municipal," commonly referred to as "Muny." It is recognized for its historical significance as one of the first courses in the South to desegregate prior to the 1954 Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education. Lions Municipal Golf Course holds a place in the Texas Registry of Historic Golf Courses and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Service. The Texas Golf Hall of Fame has also selected the course for its historical contributions to the sport. The facility hosts the Firecracker Open, which is noted as Texas' oldest amateur tournament. Throughout its history, the course has hosted notable golfers including Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Sandra Haynie, Tom Kite, and Ben Crenshaw. The layout serves as a test for local golfers, maintaining a reputation as a quality venue for the city's golf community. The course is closed for maintenance on the third Monday of every month, excluding holidays and major tournaments.
