Kingarrock Hickory Golf is a nine-hole, par 34 course located at Hill of Tarvit Mansion in Scotland. Originally established in 1924 by the Sharp family, fanatical golfers and members of the Royal & Ancient, the course closed during World War II and reopened in 2008 as Europe's only hickory-only golf course. Players use authentic hickory clubs dating from the 1880s to 1930s, creating a authentic early 20th-century golf experience.
The course features full-length play with a par 5 included, and the par 34 has never been broken despite numerous professional attempts. The layout has been slightly modified for safety, eliminating crossing holes from the original design. Maintenance follows 1920s practices without irrigation or artificial fertilizers, using hand-cut greens and period-style gang mowers. Sheep graze the rough seasonally, contributing to sustainable management.
The course demonstrates exceptional ecological value, featuring native wildflowers including marsh orchids and lady's bedstraw, which attract diverse birdlife including tree sparrows and tawny owls. The grounds support significant biodiversity through GEO Certified sustainable practices. The experience includes use of lightweight hickory club sets, instruction, and traditional refreshments at Golf Cottage.
