John F. Byrne Golf Course is an 18-hole municipal course in Philadelphia designed by Alex Findlay and opened in 1931. The course features 5,189 yards from the longest tees with a par of 67. It has a course rating of 65.0 with a slope rating of 117. Purchased by the City in the 1960s and renamed after a Philadelphia City Councilman and Pennsylvania State Senator, the course was formerly called Holmesburg Country Club.
The course is nestled in and around a valley and features tree-lined and open fairways with elevated tees and greens that create dramatic changes in elevation. The layout is highlighted by Torresdale Creek which winds through the course affecting ten holes, while oversized bunkers are strategically placed to protect the average-sized greens. The par 4 9th hole, playing 385 yards, features a sloped green guarded by two large bunkers.
The course has hosted numerous tournaments including the Philadelphia Publinks Senior Open Amateur Championship. First Tee—Greater Philadelphia manages the club to provide affordable access to golf and life skills education for youth in northeast Philadelphia. Since First Tee began operating the course in 2019, improvements have included installation of an automated irrigation system, clubhouse renovation, and continuous cart path makeover.
