The course was designed by James McMiniman and opened in 2008 after a renovation by John LaFoy, ASGCA, which maintained the original routing while implementing new agronomy technology. The course rating is 73.0 with a slope rating of 133, presenting a moderate challenge from the championship tees.

Nestled along the banks of the James River, James River Country Club has been part of the Riverside community since 1932. A notable feature of the club is its world-renowned golf museum located in the clubhouse, containing golf artifacts from the early conception of golf to recent golf memorabilia. The 18th hole is recognized as one of the top-rated finishing holes in Virginia. James River Country Club was voted Best Golf Course in the 2024 Coastal Virginia Best of Reader's Choice Awards.
