The Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course at Carlton Woods opened in 2001 to rave reviews and high acclaim. The 7,368-yard, par-72 course takes full advantage of the natural lakes, ponds, forests, and rolling terrain in the area. Located at One Carlton Woods Drive in The Woodlands, Texas, the course is a parkland layout that weaves through mature trees and alongside several water features, characterized by challenging par fours and water that comes into play on half the holes.
Designed personally by Jack Nicklaus, the generous teeing grounds and landing areas wind among lakes and parklands, and the greens feature an intriguing design of undulation and bunkering. Water features are present at holes 3 to 5, with the long par four 2nd ranked as the most difficult on the front nine. On the back nine, the 455-yard 15th hole features a menacing creek that crosses the fairway twice from tee to green. Water features are used throughout, most notably on holes 4, 5, 9, and 10.
Following its opening in 2001, the Carlton Woods' Nicklaus course was ranked the #1 private course in the Greater Houston area by the Houston Chronicle, and "Best New Private Course in Texas" and #3 in the nation by Golf Digest. In 2014, Jack Nicklaus named his course at Carlton Woods one of the Top 18 Course Designs in his illustrious career. The Chevron Championship, an LPGA major championship, relocated to the Nicklaus course at Carlton Woods beginning in 2023.
