The golf course was opened in 1923 and named after local industrialist and philanthropist Henry Stambaugh, who donated the land on which the course was developed. The course features 3,420 yards of golf from the longest tees, for a par of 36, with a course rating of 35.0 and a slope rating of 110. The course is a 9-hole layout with one par 3, seven par 4's and one par 5, with four tee sets offered ranging from 3,299 yards to 2,445 yards.
Located in the heart of Youngstown, the course plays challenging with long tees and small greens, well-maintained greens and many sand bunkers. The 1st hole at Stambaugh was chosen as one of the Greatest Golf Holes in the Valley by vindy.com readers in 2011. In 2023, the course was voted as The Vindicator Readers' Choice Gold Medal winner in the Golf Course category.
