Hans Merensky is an 18-hole, par-72 championship course spanning 6,549 yards, designed by Robert Grimsdell and established in 1967. The course is located in Phalaborwa adjacent to the Kruger National Park, within subtropical Limpopo Province. The course has been acclaimed as the best walking course in South Africa and awarded the Diamond Arrow for being the top-rated course in Limpopo.
Expansively laid out across gently undulating terrain, the course features good-width, well-maintained fairways flanked by semi-rough with small trees and bushes, making ball-finding from wayward shots manageable but requiring golfers to work the ball back through trees. The par-five 16th hole is a particularly notable hole where a pulled or hooked drive will end up in the adjacent Kruger National Park. The par-3 8th hole is particularly attractive.
The course is home to a wide variety of wildlife and over 200 species of birds, making wildlife encounters a defining characteristic. The course hosted a Sunshine Tour event in the 1980s known as the Phalaborwa Classic, when the winner received a unique trophy of an elephant's head sculpted from tamboti wood with warthog tusk ivory. Annually, a tournament of the South African Vodacom Tour is played here.
