Inverclyde
United Kingdom
Founded in 1890, Greenock Golf Club is Inverclyde's only 27-hole facility, situated high above the town with commanding views of the River Clyde, Ben Lomond, and The Trossachs. Designed by James Braid, the renowned former Open Champion who redesigned the course in 1924, the club comprises two parkland courses.
The Big Course consists of 18 holes measuring 5,850 yards across semi-moorland terrain. Despite modest length by modern standards, it presents a significant challenge through tight fairways, small undulating greens, tree-lined fairways, and strategic bunkers and burns. The nine-hole Wee Course weaves through and around the Big Course, offering varied challenges including the notable "Gully" at the 8th hole. Despite lacking Par 5s and bunkers, it provides a demanding test of golf.
Together, the 27 unique holes accommodate golfers of all ability levels, with the combination of Braid's thoughtful design and the natural landscape creating a distinctive golfing experience. The elevated location ensures spectacular views throughout play, making Greenock a notable destination for course design and scenic beauty.
