Designed by Ellis Maples and recognized as his architectural masterpiece, Grandfather Golf and Country Club's Championship Course is an 18-hole, par-72 layout measuring 7,010 yards from the championship tees. Located in Linville, North Carolina, the course sits on the west slope of Grandfather Mountain, overlooking the Linville River Valley with scenic views throughout.
The course features six tee positions to accommodate players of varying skill levels. Signature elements include natural streams, native rhododendron, and towering hemlock trees that screen holes from one another while creating distinct, flowing designs. The layout emphasizes the mountain terrain and natural topography as integral design features.
Grandfather has received significant recognition, including Golf Digest's America's 100 Greatest Courses (2013-2014), Golfweek's Top 100 Modern Golf Courses (2017), and consistent rankings as North Carolina's top mountain course. The club offers 36 holes total through the Championship Course and Mountain Springs executive course, plus a practice range. Members operate under USGA rules with carefully scheduled events.
