The Golf Club of Lebanon is an 18-hole course situated on a 400,000-square-meter site in Beirut. The layout was originally designed by a British golf architect who was brought in to create a nine-hole course with alternative tees and greens when the club relocated to its current location in 1963. The course was expanded to its full eighteen-hole configuration in 1983 with the acquisition of adjacent land. The terrain features naturally sculpted fairways and tricky greens that provide a true test of golf. The club was founded in 1923 and originally located in Bir Hassan near the old airport. It moved to its present site in 1963 after securing a long-term lease on land owned by the Civil Aviation Authority. The course is set on an area that was previously sand dunes, which were planted with grass and trees to protect the nearby airport communications center from sandstorms. The setting includes pine trees planted in the first half of the 19th century to protect Beirut from sand storms. The Golf Club of Lebanon hosted the inaugural Arab Golf Championship in 1975, an event that is now played annually in different Arab countries. The club has a history of hosting many major golf tournaments, and players from the club have represented Lebanon in regional and international competitions. Significant investment has been made to improve the course in recent years.
