Fox Den Country Club was founded by Chester A. Massey, an insurance executive from Knoxville, who sought to build one of America's finest golf courses in East Tennessee. The first nine holes opened for play on May 15, 1969, with the course originally designed and built in 1969 by renowned architect Willard Byrd, positioned amid the Smoky Mountains backdrop with rolling hills, beautiful wooded areas, ponds, and long fairway stretches. In 2004, Bill Bergin completed a redesign that significantly enhanced the layout.

The 18-hole course features 7,110 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. The course rating is 74.2 and it has a slope rating of 132. Multiple tees are available for all ages and ability to navigate the eight water features and 52 strategically placed bunkers protecting large greens, averaging 7,500 square feet. The signature hole No. 18, a par 5, requires three accurate shots to a green complex guarded by a pond on the right and bunker on the left. Each set of nine holes is arranged in an out-and-back design with both the No. 9 and No. 18 holes returning to the clubhouse.
