Empangeni Country Club was formed in the early 1900s with an 18-hole golf course originally laid out and maintained by predominately farmer members. The course has a par of 72 and measures 5,983 meters. Views from the hillside holes include those of Richards Bay, the beautiful green hills and the Indian Ocean. The eighteen-hole course is divided into two very different nines—the first demands accuracy and good shot selection and can be tight, while the second focuses on strong, straight driving and is more forgiving.
The golf course underwent a comprehensive redesign in the late 20th century, which enhanced both its challenge and visual appeal while maintaining the club's traditional charm. The club has modern practice facilities and a clubhouse positioned to host prestigious tournaments and events, with key events including the annual club championship and inter-club competitions. The course features strategic bunkers, water hazards particularly on the back nine, and rolling terrain that creates varying levels of challenge for golfers of all abilities.
