East London Golf Club, founded in 1893, stands as one of South Africa's oldest and most prestigious golfing destinations, currently ranked 9th in the country. Located in the Eastern Cape along the scenic coastal landscape, the course is nestled among rolling hills, coastal dunes, and indigenous bush with sweeping views of the Indian Ocean.
The layout masterfully blends classic links and parkland features across challenging terrain. The front nine is particularly notable, tumbling across beautifully rolling ridges with unconventional routing through dunes, valleys, and over hills to hidden targets. Notable holes include the opening holes and the 9th, which plays over a large crest then down through a bush-lined valley. The back nine features the standout 12th hole rising toward the coast with Indian Ocean views, and a excellent short par-3 at the 17th.
The course is characterized by dramatic topography creating a "roller-coaster" experience, with the strength lying in strategic design rather than length. While featuring several short par-4s, these early holes reward aggressive play with birdie opportunities. Recognized as a premier Championship course, it attracts international professionals who praise both its design and unforgettable coastal character. Wildlife including buck and native birdlife, particularly the Knysna Loerie, enhances the natural setting.
