Located in Kirishima, Kagoshima Prefecture, Chiran Country Club is a 7,059-yard championship course designed by Mitsuaki Kobayashi. Opened in 1991, the facility is set within a sprawling hilly landscape that offers multiple routing options for each hole, allowing players to tailor their strategy to their specific skill level. The course layout is designed to be deceptively gentle; while the fairways appear flat and the pins are clearly visible, the design demands precise ball-striking and adherence to the architect's intended flight paths to secure birdies. The course presents a strategic test where wind plays a critical role, with prevailing breezes blowing from west to east. Players must constantly account for this wind direction when selecting their targets. The greens are particularly demanding, featuring severe left-to-right breaks that punish inaccurate approaches. The difficulty is further compounded by hazards that guard the putting surfaces, requiring disciplined course management rather than aggressive power play. The first hole sets the tone for the round as a long par-4 that runs alongside an out-of-bounds line on the left side. The risk of a left-sided pull on the second shot is high, making the center of the green the safest landing area, though overshooting the green brings the OB back into play. The second hole serves as a formidable par-5, featuring a large water hazard that sweeps in from the right side in front of the green. Even if a ball clears the water, it faces a severe side bunker, forcing players to lay up and settle for par rather than risking a triple bogey. The third hole offers a distinct change of pace as a par-3 that plays through a wide expanse of cherry trees. The hole features a large, well-protected green with bunkers, inviting players to commit fully to their approach shot. The round concludes with a dramatic 558-yard par-5 eighteenth hole, which is framed by pine trees and a water hazard. The strategy here involves placing the drive in the center of the fairway and the second shot near the grass bunkers, setting up a third shot that must be dropped softly onto the center of the green.
