Chester-le-Street Golf Club is a mature parkland course nestled in the countryside surrounding Lumley Castle and along the banks of the River Wear. Designed by Open Championship winners Sandy Herd and Ted E Ray, the course offers varied terrain with scenic views across historic landscape. To the west, the course overlooks the Emirates Durham International Cricket Ground with fells and hills beyond, while mature woodland surrounds the eastern boundaries.

The course is notable for its royal heritage—King George VI, then Prince Albert, Duke of York, was a regular player before his ascension to the throne in 1936. He donated a signed photograph to the clubhouse in 1928. The club's design thoughtfully blends the golf course into the surrounding countryside, creating an aesthetically distinctive layout that has earned it the designation "Course Fit For A King."

The course combines strategic design with natural landscape features, offering golfers a blend of challenge and natural beauty across its parkland setting.
