Carmel Country Club is a private golf facility located at 4735 Carmel Road in Charlotte, North Carolina. The club operates two 18-hole championship courses, providing a total of 36 holes for its members. The property is situated in a setting characterized by rolling hills and a classic, lamppost-lined drive that has been a feature of the club since its inception. The golf layout has evolved significantly since the club's founding in 1947. The original course, which opened in 1950, was designed by Ellis Maples. This initial layout was known for its natural, rugged terrain, with members historically engaging in "picking parties" to remove rocks from the rough. In 1969, the South Course was added, also designed by Ellis Maples, expanding the club's capacity to two full 18-hole layouts. A major redesign of the South Course was undertaken in 1988 by renowned architect Rees Jones. Jones introduced elevated greens, mounds, and bunkers to increase the strategic demand of the holes. His design notes specifically highlighted the 11th hole, where the green complex was crafted to require a short iron for the approach shot, creating a more challenging and demanding test for golfers. The club also underwent a renovation of the North Course and an expansion of its practice facility in 2016. Carmel Country Club is recognized for its family-oriented atmosphere and extensive amenities, including a resort-style pool complex and a premier event destination, while maintaining a focus on high-quality golf and member service.
