Play is organised in 4-somes with 2 carts assigned per group (i.e. two pairs per group). Best-shot (best ball) format — each hole's team score is the better of the two players' scores. Veenker Memorial Golf Course is a premier public golf facility owned and operated by Iowa State University, located in Ames, Iowa. The course officially opened on May 12, 1938, following a vision by George F. Veenker, former ISU athletic director and football coach, and ISU President Raymond Hughes. Originally designed by Perry Maxwell, the course was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Progress Administration. VMGC has evolved into one of the Midwest's most challenging and talked-about golf courses, known for demanding play and excellent conditions. The facility serves Iowa State students, faculty, staff, and the broader Ames community. The course offers a comprehensive range of golfing activities and amenities, including a driving range, instruction, club fitting, and clubhouse rental services. The facility hosts various programs including men's and ladies' leagues, junior golf instruction, and the Iowa Masters tournament.
