Founded over a century ago, it ranks among the finest championship courses in the region and is regularly voted in the Top 100 courses in England by major golf publications including Golf World, Today's Golfer, and National Club Golfer. The course has hosted significant qualifying tournaments, including Final Qualifying for The Open from 2018 to 2022, qualifying rounds for the Women's British Open and Senior Open, and co-hosted The Amateur Championship in 2022 alongside neighbouring Royal Lytham & St Annes.
