Water Gap Country Club first opened for play in 1923 and was designed by Robert White, the first president of the PGA. The course has a par of 72 and plays to 6,237 yards from the back tees. The links-style course is extremely hilly, and while not long by today's standards, the hills produce many uphill shots that add at least 500 yards to the actual measured distance. The signature hole is the par-3 fourth, which plays from an elevated tee to an elevated green. Water Gap Country Club is located in Delaware Water Gap, Pennsylvania, one hour from Philadelphia and less than two hours from New York City. The property sits on 156 acres in the Pocono Mountains region. The course features dramatically hilly terrain, lightning fast undulating greens guarded by mature trees, elevation changes throughout that guarantee flat lies will be hard to find, and several tricky blind shots. The historic course hosted the Eastern Open in 1926-1928, making it a significant tournament venue. The course was designed and constructed in 1922 by Robert White. After going bankrupt during World War II and being vacant for fifteen years with parcels sold off, Howard Knickman purchased all the land in 1957 and spent two years restoring the grounds before reopening it under the Water Gap Country Club name.
