Bowring Park Golf Course

Merseyside

Bowring Park Golf Course is an 18-hole, par 70 public parkland course measuring 6,191 yards, located in Huyton on the eastern outskirts of Liverpool in Merseyside. The course was established in 1913 on land that forms part of Bowring Park, a historic green space gifted to the city of Liverpool by Alderman Sir William Bowring for the permanent use of its inhabitants. It is widely regarded as the oldest municipal golf course in England. The course was designed and has subsequently been worked on by Hawtree Ltd, the long-established golf architecture practice. The expansion of the M62 motorway in the 1970s bisected the original layout, temporarily reducing the course to nine holes, before land south of the motorway was acquired in the 1980s to restore the full 18-hole configuration. This history gives the course an unusual characteristic: players must cross beneath the motorway during the round, transitioning between the two distinct halves of the layout. The terrain is gently undulating parkland, with mature trees framing the majority of fairways. The course contains no par 5s, being composed entirely of par 3s and par 4s, giving it a compact, accuracy-focused character throughout. The course operates as a public pay-and-play facility managed on behalf of the local authority and has no significant professional tournament history. It serves primarily as an accessible, affordable venue for golfers across the wider Liverpool and Merseyside area, valued for its historical distinction and its parkland setting within a well-used public park.

Bracken Ghyll Golf Club

West Yorkshire 4 upcoming events

Bracken Ghyll Golf Club is an 18-hole parkland course founded in 1993 and located on Skipton Road in Addingham, West Yorkshire, between Ilkley and Skipton on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. The club opened initially as a nine-hole layout before expanding to 18 holes, with Jonathan Tucker credited as the architect of the expanded course around 2000. The layout measures approximately 5,686 yards from the standard tees to a par of 69, set across undulating parkland that National Club Golfer magazine has described as an intriguing mix of the old and the new, surprisingly mature for a course of its age. The course occupies hilly terrain with significant changes in elevation throughout the round, making it a more physically demanding walk than its modest length might suggest. The front nine is notably shorter than the back and contains several brief par fours, while the back nine opens up with longer holes and more dramatic scenery. The 12th hole plays alongside the prominent outline of Beamsley Beacon, and from the 13th tee there are sweeping views down the Wharfe Valley towards Bolton Abbey. The par-five 14th, the stroke index one hole at 500 yards, requires a precise approach through tree-lined narrows. The signature hole is the par-three 17th, known as the Quarry Hole, which plays 148 yards from the white tees to a raised green with a stream running along the right side — a frequent card-wrecker late in the round. The 18th is a strong par four to finish.
