Junior National Golf Club (formerly Tres Rios) is a desert golf course originally designed by renowned architect Robert "Red" Lawrence and opened as Sierra Estrella Golf Course in the early 1960s. The 18-hole course features Lawrence's signature design elements, including strategically placed trees in fairways that add strategic complexity and visual impact.
The layout includes par 5s on holes 1 and 10, multiple challenging par 4s described as "the teeth of the course" on the back nine, and several par 3s with distinctive green complexes. Notable features include bunker-protected greens with significant undulation, water hazards on select holes, and strategically positioned trees throughout. The course has evolved from its original desert style to a parkland-style layout with extensive tree coverage and irrigated fairways.
The terrain transitions between level sections and uphill plays, with greens featuring back-to-front slopes, multiple tiers, and varied speeds that challenge course management. Hole 11 is noted as one of the most challenging, featuring an uphill green with complex slope reading. The course is undergoing restoration efforts to return to Red Lawrence's original desert design philosophy while improving overall playability and conditions.
