Briars Golf Club, designed by renowned architect Stanley Thompson, opened in 1922 in Sutton West, Ontario. The course began as a nine-hole layout that challenged golfers from its inception and earned recognition as one of Ontario's finest nine-hole courses. The layout was expanded to eighteen holes in 1972, marking a significant milestone in the club's history.

Set in a cottager-oriented community, the course is situated on leased land originally containing the original nine holes. The terrain and design reflect Thompson's creative direction, establishing Briars as part of golf's historic landscape alongside other legendary Thompson-designed courses.

The course presents considerable difficulty, having challenged golfers consistently since its opening. The original clubhouse, built in 1926, remains in use as the Briars Teahouse. The club's maintenance standards evolved significantly over the decades, from manual watering and scythe-cut rough in earlier years to modern greenskeeping practices. Club competitions and inter-club events have been central to its history, with weekend play being the primary focus throughout its operation.
