Tagalong Golf Resort is located approximately 20 miles northeast of Rice Lake in Barron County, Wisconsin, on the shore of Red Cedar Lake. Originally constructed between 1916 and 1922 by wealthy businessman Frank Stout, the course began as a private 9-hole layout for family and guests. The original nine holes feature wide fairways, open roughs, and elevated greens surrounded by deep grass bunkers. A second nine holes were later added with a similar design philosophy but offering tighter fairways that demand more accurate play.
The course's construction involved notable amenities for its era, including bentgrass greens reportedly sourced from Scotland and an irrigation system utilizing fourteen miles of pipe. The course's opening was commemorated in 1925 with a match between U.S. Open champion Willie Macfarlane and British Open champion "Long Jim" Barnes. The layout accommodates golfers of varying skill levels and maintains the character of its early twentieth-century origins while offering distinct playing characteristics across its two nines.
