Stocks Golf Club is an 18-hole championship course located in Aldbury, Hertfordshire, set within a picturesque valley in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The site is a chalk downland layout that officially opened in 1992 as part of Stocks Country Club before being redesigned in 2012 to its current specification. The course measures over 6,800 yards in length and plays to a par of 73. The terrain is characterized by its excellent drainage, which allows play in all conditions except snow, and the absence of temporary tees or greens.
The primary defensive features of the course are its substantial grass rough, which is described as impenetrable and hosts indigenous wildflowers and ground-nesting birds, and its nine raised greens. These greens are sufficiently elevated that the bottom of the flagstick is not visible from the approach, requiring players to consult pin position notes. The layout includes three water hazards: a lake visible on the right of the drive-in, a small pond in front of the 12th green, and another hidden behind a ridge on the first fairway. Bunkers have been rebuilt to high specifications, and the rough is managed with extra cuts to prevent errant balls from running into deeper hazards.
Hole-by-hole analysis reveals specific strategic challenges. The first hole is a right dog-leg with out of bounds down the right side and a pond lurking beyond a ridge at 220 yards. The second hole is a long par 4 where a fairway bunker and cross-slope complicate the approach. The third hole, while seemingly innocuous, features a large green with significant slope and tricky pin positions. The fourth hole is the longest par 5 on the course, where out of bounds down the left and a downhill second shot encourage players to lay up rather than attempt the green in two.
The club maintains a private membership structure and does not accept golf societies, though members may bring guests. Facilities include a bespoke restaurant, a bar, and practice areas comprising nets, a putting green, and a chipping area with a bunker. Buggies and trollies are available for hire. The course is situated near Tring, with the clubhouse designed to blend into the surrounding countryside.
