The St John course is an American parkland style design and was the first private 'Signature' golf course built in Australia, opening on 30 November 2000. Designed by Jack Nicklaus, the course extends 6670 metres to the banks of the Yarra River. The championship par 72 course features an Australian Slope Rating of 139 off the Gold tee and a Scratch Rating of 74, presenting a challenging test at every turn. St John is the only course in the Yarra Valley where players can be assured they can play 12 months of the year and within 36 hours of a major rain event.
The course takes advantage of the Yarra Valley's natural contours, with dazzling water features flowing throughout while strategically placed slopes, mounds and traps make every hole distinctive. The par four 8th hole, measuring 407 yards, is considered the hardest on the course, with players teeing off through a chute of trees and approaching from above their feet as the fairway slopes from right to left; the green has bunkers either side with only a narrow entrance. The par three 11th hole, measuring 180 yards, is regarded by many as the best hole, featuring water down the right side and a quarry face bordering the left side of the green, with a putting surface nearly forty yards in length making club selection critical.
