Southward Ho Country Club is a private country club located in Bay Shore, New York. The club features an 18 hole championship golf course designed by renowned designer A.W. Tillinghast and was founded in 1923. The course measures 6,524 yards from the longest tees for a par of 71, with a course rating of 71.8 and a slope rating of 131.
Located just a half-mile from Great South Bay, Southward Ho is Tillinghast's lone rendition of a British seaside course. Tillinghast's 1923 design was exposed to powerful Atlantic winds and emphasized the ground game with spacious fairways, broad entrances and runoffs around the greens. The course is narrow, has flat fairways, six ponds that form water hazards and a variety of rising and falling elevations for tees and greens.
A notable feature is a Hell's Half Acre sand trap that bisects the course's 11th hole, a 551-yard par-5, with rows of white sand angled into a V-shape as they curl around mounded grass pads. The Havemeyer Invitational is still played today in honor of a member who rescued the club from financial decline.
