The Sound of Freedom Golf Course is an 18-hole championship par-72 course measuring 6,642 yards, designed by George Cobb and marked as his first course design. The course is located on an active military installation—the Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point—and is notably free of residential development along the fairways. The greens feature ultra dwarf hybrid Bermuda grass, providing smooth and fast playing surfaces. Originally built in 1943, the course was later renovated in 2003 under the direction of architect Clyde Johnston.
Recently renovated and located directly on the picturesque Neuse River, the course offers great water views along with a 24-hour driving range, chipping area, practice putting green, club rentals, snack bar and PGA teaching professionals on staff. The MCAS Cherry Point Commander's Cup Golf Tournament, one of the oldest tournaments in the area, celebrates over 34 years of annual competition at the course.
