Salem Country Club is a par 72, 18-hole championship golf course located at 133 Forest Street in Peabody, Massachusetts. Designed by Donald Ross, the course moved to its current Peabody location in 1926 and is regarded as one of the finest enduring legacies of the renowned architect. The layout is characterized by rolling fairways that offer few level lies for approach shots, leading into strategically bunkered and crowned greens. The course is known for its difficulty, where the difficult rough makes accuracy essential. Water hazards are present but are described as limited and penalizing rather than intrusive. Ross's design philosophy is evident in the course's reputation for fairness; good shots are rewarded while poor shots are appropriately challenged, making the layout suitable for players of all abilities. Extensive practice facilities complement the main championship layout. Salem Country Club has a significant history in major golf, having hosted six USGA championships. These include the 1932 U.S. Women's Amateur, won by Virginia Van Wie; the 1954 U.S. Women's Open, won by Babe Didrikson Zaharias; the 1977 U.S. Senior Amateur, won by Dale Morey; the 1984 U.S. Women's Open, won by Hollis Stacy; the 2001 U.S. Senior Open, won by Bruce Fleisher; and the 2017 U.S. Senior Open, won by Kenny Perry.
