Nara Yagyu Country Club is an 18-hole championship course located in Nara City, Nara Prefecture, Japan. The course was designed by renowned architect Fukuichi Kato and opened in 1996, marking it as the last new golf club to open in Nara Prefecture at that time. Situated on a 360,000-tsubo plot of land, the layout is characterized by wide fairways, generous spacing between holes, and a generally flat terrain that maintains strategic complexity. The course features five sets of teeing grounds—black, blue, white, gold, and red—allowing for varying lengths and difficulties. The black tournament tees extend the course to 7,150 yards with a course rating of 73.9, while the regular blue tees play to 6,743 yards with a rating of 72.0. The course is divided into nine-hole out and back loops, each offering distinct challenges. The front nine includes a mix of par-4s, par-3s, and a par-5 second hole, which features a doglegged slope. The back nine presents a demanding finish, highlighted by the 18th hole, a par-5 stretching to 580 yards from the back tees. The 10th hole, a par-4 of 453 yards from the back tees, serves as the longest par-4 on the layout. The course is known for its strategic design, with well-placed bunkers and undulating greens that reward precise approach shots. The greens are maintained as bentgrass, providing a consistent putting surface that complements the course's reputation as a high-quality championship layout. Historical and cultural elements are integrated into the landscape, adding unique character to the round. A 5th-century kofun (burial mound) is preserved on the sloping terrain to the right of the dogleg at the second hole. Additionally, the site of the former Fujio Castle, built by Tsutsui Junkei during the Oda Nobunaga era, lies beneath the 13th green. The area around the 13th green features a stone Buddha park, where various stone statues and Jizo figures unearthed from the site have been collected and preserved. These historical remnants are carefully maintained, blending the course's sporting attributes with the region's rich heritage. Nara Yagyu Country Club has hosted various significant amateur and professional events since its opening. It hosted the 6th Nara Prefecture Open Golf Championship in 2005, organized by the Nara Prefecture Professional Golf Association, which has held its qualifying rounds there annually since the 4th edition. The club also hosted the Japan Professional Golf Association Senior Tour qualifying event in 2006 and has been a regular venue for the Japan Golf Tour Organization (JGTO) Qualifying Tournament Stage 2 since 2009. Additionally, it hosts qualifying competitions for the Kansai Student Golf Championship, the Kansai Amateur Golf Championship, and other regional amateur events. The course is designed to accommodate these tournaments, with its black tees available for play by members regardless of skill level, provided they are accompanied by a member. The club operates on a membership basis, with entry for non-members requiring introduction by a member. The facility includes a 240-yard driving range with 10 bays, a dedicated bunker practice area, and three practice greens ranging from 600 to 750 square meters. The clubhouse, designed by the Higashihata Architectural Office, reflects a traditional Japanese aesthetic, aiming for a quiet and dignified atmosphere that complements the course's elegant design. The course's layout and maintenance reflect a commitment to providing a challenging yet enjoyable experience for golfers of all levels, from local amateurs to touring professionals.
