Nanzan Country Club is a 18-hole golf course located in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Designed by the renowned architect Seiichi Inoue, the course is set within a complex terrain of ridges and valleys that Inoue utilized to create a strategic layout. The property spans approximately 350,000 tsubo (about 116 hectares), with nearly half of the land preserved as forest, adhering to Inoue’s design philosophy of minimizing environmental disruption. The course opened in November 1975, following a development process that began in the late 1960s, initiated by Sobei Sasaki, a prominent figure in the Nagoya business community and former president of CBC. The layout is characterized by significant elevation changes and strategic hazards. The front nine begins with the "Goraiko" hole, a relatively flat opening that sets the tone for a course where precision is paramount. Hole 3 presents a downhill approach with out-of-bounds on both sides, while Hole 4 features a series of bunkers guarding the front of the green, with out-of-bounds behind it. The difficulty increases with Hole 6, which requires a tee shot over a ridge, avoiding a deep valley to the right, and leads to a second shot that is often uphill and constrained by trees. Hole 7 demands a carry over a valley, with out-of-bounds protecting the right side of the green. The back nine continues the theme of strategic challenge. Hole 8 features a downhill tee shot from the front tees, with a second shot that is an uphill approach to a green guarded by the course’s signature "Fujimatsu" (husband and wife pines). Hole 9 is a par-4 that requires a carry over a water hazard, approximately 200 yards from the back tees. The turn brings Hole 10, where the tee shot must avoid a pond on the right and a valley on the left. Hole 11 is a dogleg left with a downhill approach to a green that has out-of-bounds at the back. Hole 14 is a long par-4 requiring a carry over a valley of about 220 yards from the back tees, with out-of-bounds lining both sides of the fairway. Inoue’s design intent was to create a course where every shot requires careful consideration of route and ball flight, rather than simply rewarding long hitters. The course is known for its natural beauty, with seasonal changes offering views of cherry blossoms and autumn foliage, particularly from the nearby Yakusa River area. The name "Nanzan" is derived from the Chinese phrase "寿比南山" (Shou Bi Nan Shan), meaning "longevity like the southern mountain," reflecting the founders' wish for the club's enduring prosperity. The course is widely regarded as a difficult test of golf, demanding accuracy and course management from players of all levels.
