The Links at Montague is a nine-hole executive golf course located in Loon Lake, Nova Scotia, situated within the Halifax area. Designed by architect Graham Cooke, the course spans 1,880 yards and was the first executive course built in the province. It opened for play in 2001, constructed on land that was originally part of a historic estate established in the early 19th century. The layout is set amidst native hardwoods, century-old softwoods, and historic farm fields, with the course weaving through natural slopes and landscape areas that are environmentally sensitive. The course features bentgrass fairways and greens, bordered by Kentucky bluegrass roughs, with three sets of bentgrass tees on each hole to allow for varying levels of challenge. The design incorporates shaped fairways and strategically molded bunkers intended to test all aspects of a golfer's game. The setting includes views of Loon Lake and is adjacent to Montague Farm, which is home to Belgian Draft horses. The property also includes a driving range with seven target greens and a golf academy offering instruction for various skill levels. Key characteristics of the layout include a variety of par 3 and par 4 holes that demand precision and strategic shot-making. The second hole is a short par 3 featuring a virtually island green bordered by marshland and water, requiring accuracy to avoid the surrounding hazards. The fourth hole offers panoramic views of Loon Lake and plays to a long, narrow green guarded by steep slopes, deep bunkers, and a rocky stream. The seventh hole is a dramatic par 4 that requires players to navigate a boardwalk through wetlands and approach a narrow, high green protected by bunkers and grassy hollows. The ninth hole serves as a pronounced dogleg par 4, accented by an old stone fence and requiring players to clear a marsh crossing the fairway while avoiding a sentinel tree and a deep rock-walled pond below the green. The course is designed to be accessible yet challenging, with the varied tee placements allowing players to adjust the difficulty. The Links at Montague also hosts recreational leagues and tournaments, maintaining its role as a community-based public golf facility.
