Mauna Kea Golf Course is an 18-hole championship course originally designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. when it opened in 1964. Located on the Kohala Coast of Hawaii's Big Island, the course is set against a stunning backdrop of ocean vistas and volcanic landscape. Recent renovations led by Robert Trent Jones Jr. have modernized the course while preserving its original character and breathtaking beauty.
The course features Platinum Paspalum turf on fairways and greens, offering improved consistency and environmental sustainability. Notable characteristics include oceanfront holes, particularly the signature par-3 third hole and oceanfront par-3 eleventh hole. The layout presents a challenging yet accessible experience for golfers of all skill levels.
The course hosts the prestigious Mauna Kea Resort Pro-Am tournament, first held in 1973, which features professional and amateur competitors in a four-ball format. Amenities include a full-service pro shop, practice facilities, PGA instruction, and on-course dining at the Number 3 clubhouse restaurant. GPS-equipped golf carts assist with yardage determination.
