MacGregor Downs Country Club in Cary, North Carolina is a private club nestled on the shores of Lake MacGregor, established in 1967. Designed by Willard Byrd, one of America's leading golf course architects, the 18-hole course is annually rated as one of the best golf courses in the Southeastern United States. The course has a par of 72, with a length of 7,003 yards and yardages range from 3,950 for juniors to 7,003 yards for low handicappers. The course features Bent Grass greens and Bermuda Grass fairways.
The course routing is a giant circle running clockwise around MacGregor Lake, with both nines being hilly and tree-lined. No two holes are adjacent and four tee boxes offer as much risk as you decide to accept. The course is noted for its impeccable greens, hilly tree-lined fairways, and infamous 18th hole. The 18th hole is visually stunning and challenging, requiring a tee shot from an elevated tee box over the shimmering waters of MacGregor Lake.
In the early 1970s, MacGregor Downs hosted the Liggett & Myers PGA Tour Match Play Championships and currently hosts the Stitch Intercollegiate each year. In 2014, Concert Golf Partners purchased MacGregor Downs and completed over $4 million in capital improvements, including a completely renovated golf course and clubhouse renovations.
