La Monacilla Golf Club is an 18-hole course located in Aljaraque, in the municipality of Huelva, approximately five kilometres from the city centre and five minutes from the beaches near Punta Umbría. The course was designed by José María Olazábal and opened in 2010. It plays to a par of 72 over 6,851 metres from the back tees, with the layout reducing to 5,164 metres from the forward tees. The course rating is 73.0 with a slope of 125. The site occupies a pine woodland at the mouth of the River Odiel, in an area known as La Monacilla, and no buildings adjoin the playing area, preserving an uninterrupted natural environment throughout the round.
Olazábal's design follows the natural contours of the land closely, with fairways featuring subtle undulations and slopes leading to large, well-protected greens. Wide fairways are framed by the surrounding pine forest, and strategically positioned fairway bunkers define the ideal lines from the tee on most holes. A distinctive feature of the layout is the provision of six tee boxes on every hole, allowing each player to select a configuration appropriate to their level and giving the course a notably flexible character for different standards of golfer. Water is a significant presence on the course, with lakes coming into play around the 2nd and 7th holes in particular. The signature hole is the 7th, a par-5 bisected by a stream connecting two lakes, where the drive must be played short of the water, the layup must carry it, and the approach must then avoid further water short of the green and a bunker beyond.
The course is set within one of the most ecologically distinctive areas of the province, adjacent to the Odiel Marshes Biosphere Reserve. Practice facilities include a driving range, two pitching greens with a practice bunker, and a putting green.
