The Mussalo golf course, located on Mussalo Island in Kotka, is an 18-hole layout designed by architect Kosti Kuronen and opened in 1989. Situated just a few minutes from the Kotka city center, the course is characterized by a rugged, natural aesthetic that integrates pine forests and sea views. The terrain features undulating hills and water hazards, with the front nine offering a more accessible start before the course introduces water obstacles on the back nine. The design emphasizes the natural landscape, with tee shots often directed toward the sea before rising into pine-framed hills and descending into valleys lined with water. The course is known for its high-quality greens and challenging nature, often ranking among the top 20 best-maintained courses in Finland. The proximity to the sea results in a long playing season with a focus on autumn play, and the greens are noted for their specific difficulty and condition. The layout includes notable features such as the 13th hole and the tee area for the 14th, which are considered highlights of Kuronen’s design. The course has undergone various modifications over the years, including the addition of new greens and the adjustment of tee markers to accommodate different skill levels. Mussalo has a significant history in competitive golf, hosting the Stroke Play Finnish Championships in 1998 and 2014, and the Match Play Finnish Championships in 1995 and 2001. It also hosted a Finnish Tour event in 2002 and the Stroke Play Finnish Championships for Mid-level players in 2015. In 2006, the course hosted the Boys' Team European Championship, which included participants such as Rory McIlroy from Northern Ireland. The course is managed by Kymen Golf ry and is part of the Kotka Golf Center facilities.
