IBB International Golf & Country Club is an 18-hole course located in the Aso Drive area of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria. The course covers approximately 101 hectares of land and features a par of 72, with a standard scratch score of 71. The layout consists of four par 5s, four par 3s, and ten par 4s, measuring 6,079 metres as the crow flies. Construction began in February 1987, with the initial nine holes-now played as the back nine-completed in 1992. The front nine was added in April 1994, creating the full 18-hole layout. The course was designed by agronomist Richard Stillwell, who also maintains several European Tour courses, and the grounds are maintained by Julius Berger plc. The setting is defined by its location near Aso Rock and the surrounding hills, with the course crisscrossed by rivers, lakes, and dams. These water features are home to fish and crocodiles, while the grounds also support a variety of wildlife including birds, monkeys, and antelopes. The fairways are lined with ornamental palms, fruit trees, and other vegetation. A sophisticated irrigation system draws water from the Pendam Dam in Asokoro to keep the course lush year-round. The first nine holes are noted for their challenging nature, having been built on reclaimed paddy land that required extensive dewatering. Hole 1 is a 355-metre straight par 4 that offers views of the Abuja Central Business District. It is guarded by a lateral water hazard and a pond, with seven bunkers protecting the elevated, heaped green. Hole 2 is a 157-metre straight par 3 running parallel to the first, featuring a pond on the left and a deep valley with ornamental palms. The par 5 third hole is a 467-metre dogleg with eight bunkers and a parabolic green that slopes from left to right. The fourth hole, a 352-metre par 4, is described as the most difficult on the course. It is a dogleg where straight shots must carry a water hazard known as the "tiger line," with six bunkers and a lateral water hazard close to the green causing frequent ball losses. The club includes a floodlit driving range, two practice putting greens, and practice bunkers. It also features a clubhouse with a pro shop, locker rooms, and a restaurant. The course has hosted amateur tournaments, including events sponsored by Sheraton Hotels & Towers and Beecham/Smithkline in the early 1990s. The club is managed by a Board of Trustees and is registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission.
